What Is The Purpose of Life?

What is the purpose of life? Why are we here? The purpose of life is to learn to truly love ourselves and each other. If we could love one another, there would be no need for the tragedies of wars and the atrocities of prejudice would not exist.

What most of us yearn for throughout our life, what we seek is to complete our life and existence through love. Love, in all its forms, is indeed our ultimate goal. That is why a life without love is a lonely existence that no amount of money, success, and other diversions can fill.

Love comes to us in many forms every day even when we are not able to recognize it as we are absorbed in our daily tasks and routines. It manifests itself in our daily life with a smile from a child, kindness from a stranger, caring friends, a wagging tail, a purr, and the excitement of our loved ones when they see us – among other ways. Try to observe love manifesting itself for you today, count the ways, pay attention, and let your heart rejoice.

Therefore, we must strive to love each other as we love ourselves or better. For ultimately, the big question we might have to answer when we pass on to the next life is how much and how well did you love, not just one person but everything and everyone that crossed your path.

The Dawn of a New Era: December 21st

There are only a few days left before the big date.  Some people are wondering what to expect, others think that nothing will happen. They think that December 21st, 2012 will be just another “fluke” as the Y2K fiasco. However, most do not know that the Y2K phenomenon was averted because software engineers and computer technicians (I was one of them) were busy fixing and setting up the systems to prevent the catastrophe. Of course, they worked on the problem for a couple of years before the incident was supposed to happen. Coding and hardware were reconfigured. The fact is that by the time the year 2000 rolled over, we were ready!

Now, what makes the December 21st different is the fact that not only the Mayans marked this date as a critical one in Earth’s history but also the Aztecs, Egyptian, and other ancient civilizations. Moreover, most astronomers have admitted to the fact that there will be an unusual planetary alignment in our solar system on December 21st. Some geologists and other scientists say that such alignment occurs every 26,000 years and it brings about dramatic changes in climate and the Earth’s structure. Does this mean that we are about to face the end of the world? Well, yes and no.

We will face the end of the world as we know it so far but will be witnesses and participants of a wonderful rebirth of Earth. Earth is transmuting into a new state of being. It has been doing so for years – as a mother patiently undergoes the changes in her body for 9 to 10 months before giving birth. On December 21st, our mother Earth will give birth to itself in a new form. Think of it as a caterpillar turning into a wonderful butterfly. Thus, yes, it will be the end of the world as we know it but the beginning of a new one. It is up to us all to make of this new world a much better one than the one we are leaving behind.

Some people have predicted that part of this new Earth transformation is a shift in polarity, which will bring about between 30 hrs to three days of total darkness and lack of electricity. I do not like darkness and I am definitely not looking forward to this part of the rebirth. However, after that period of darkness, the sun will shine again and light will return to our lives. I believe that what it is most important to do during the time of darkness is try to be together with our loved ones and keep calm. Afterwards, when we emerge from the darkness (which I believe will also be caused by the planetary alignment since Jupiter or Venus will align perfectly with Earth, thus causing a total eclipse worldwide), our environment might be quite different and we might begin to perceive life from a different prism. It is then when we will have the opportunity to mend the wrongs that we have done to Earth and on Earth or, choose to follow the path of destruction that we have forged so far. It is like we are getting a second chance to be the best that we can be not just as individuals but as a community of beings.

Therefore, don’t worry so much about what will happen on December 21st but rather focus on what you will become after you emerge. What are we going to make out of our new world and environment? In fact, those of us who grew up before the Internet and personal computers might be better prepared to survive and lead our younger generations to a new beginning. We can help them learn the basics and survive for a while without the comforts and convenience of today’s technology. Of course, we will build up the technology once again but this time, we must be more careful about the way we use it and what we sacrifice for it.

Anyway, we will know soon enough, some earlier than others considering that in some parts of the world, December 21st is coming one day earlier than in the western hemisphere. For them, “D-day” is on Thursday!

Embrace this new opportunity to define yourself, life, and values anew. The world will only end if we choose to destroy it.

Pondering About Meat Eating

I am an animal lover. I have always had a spiritual bond with animals. Perhaps, that’s the reason I’ve never been harmed by any, even some dangerous ones I’ve encountered in my journey. Animals just come into my life and settle.

Therefore, lately, I have been feeling rather guilty about eating meat. I was raised a meat eater and never gave much thought to it. I bought into the mentality that animals, at least some, were here for us to use and enjoy in our tummy.

However, a year ago, I became an animal’s welfare and rights advocate. Although my advocacy centered mostly on trying to prevent the murder of healthy and adoptable homeless pets at local pounds, their plight opened my eyes and heart to that of many other animals that we tend to take for granted and disrespect. Moreover, my deep love for animals began to make me feel guilty about enjoying a piece of chicken or a steak. I began to debate the options.

I found out that most vegans and some vegetarians refuse to eat meat mostly because they don’t want to kill anything alive for their nourishment, especially animals. However, my mind jumped to the fact that vegetables, fruits, nuts, and grains are also living beings. They were alive before they were harvested from their source. Therefore, by eating them, we are still killing to sustain our bodies. So, what’s the answer? I thought.

Through some pondering, I came to the conclusion that to fulfill the purpose, the only thing that we, animals lovers, should eat would be dairy products. However, when discussing it with my son, he made a good point: What about the microorganisms that live in dairy products? Bummer!  I had thought I had found the answer to my dilemma!

Consequently, no matter how I look at it, the only way I can avoid killing anything to nourish my body is by not eating at all. But then, my body would surely die! I resigned myself to just enjoy the food and thank each of those I eat for their sacrifice and the nourishment they provide to my body. Since I cannot stop eating, the least I can do is to thank and honor what I eat and keep advocating against the unnecessary extermination of those we don’t need to eat.
